Hard Sun (which already aired in the U.K. last month) premieres here in the U.S. on Wednesday, March 7th on Hulu. This is a spoiler-free review for all six Season 1 episodes, which will be released all at once.

From Luther creator/writer Neil Cross comes Hard Sun, a series with many similarities to the acclaimed (though notably vicious) Idris Elba cop show with an added twist: What if two mismatched, sketchy-in-their-own-right detectives discovered a diabolical government secret? One so big that it marks them for death almost immediately?

Of course, that sounds more like the plot of a movie than an ongoing series. How can your main heroes (and I use that term loosely since this is a Neil Cross joint) remain solid series protagonists if they're constantly in hiding? Well, there are some workarounds for that.

Hard Sun faces some challenges when it comes to juggling, or even prioritizing, all of its moving parts - the two cops' varying levels of duplicity, the ghastly murder sprees, and the much larger apocalyptic arc - but it's still a welcome blend of grittiness. For whatever reason, this smorgasbord of darkness works well (though not without some stumbles) whereas Amazon's Absentia mostly didn't. It's a crisis pile-on, but it's always engaging and the leads are quite captivating.

Sturgess' "good time" shady DCI, Charlie Hicks, is probably the least likable element of the series (if you're someone who needs to actively root for the protagonist), given his constant state of scrambling and the fact that he starts the show with a deep well of chicanery. A family man, he loves who he loves fervently - but not loyally. Hicks' tale is the closest this series is going to come to finding a redemption arc, I assume, though neither headlining cop ever really ditches their desperation and willingness to break every single rule.

Luther's Nikki Amuka-Bird rounds out the core trio as a formidable MI-5 agent, Grace, determined to keep as many hard facts about Hard Sun a secret as possible. It's a nice spin on her Luther role which saw her usually trying to discover the terrible truth regarding her charismatic-but-crooked boss. When Renko and Hicks aren't trying to chase down ...

Hard Sun's savage blend of crime thriller and apocalyptic paranoia piece works really well, though this might be one of the only times I ever argue for, perhaps, a longer season. There is a cramped and claustrophobic quality involved with mixing this many layers of deception and darkness and sometimes the constant "cat and mouse" game between the t...
