In the year 2030, a 52-year-old Ted Mosby begins to tell his daughter (Penny) and son (Luke), the story of how he met their mother. Ted begins in 2005, when he was a 27-year-old architect living in New York with his two best friends from college; Marshall Eriksen, a law student, and Lily Aldrin, a kindergarten teacher - who have been dating almost nine years. On the night Lily and Marshall get engaged, Ted begins to think about marriage and decides he wants to find his soulmate. The group's most recent addition - womanizing corporate suit Barney Stinson, does not want Ted - or anyone - to get married. As the two visit their local bar, Ted sees an ambitious reporter, Robin Scherbatsky, from across the room. He feels an immediate attraction to her and wonders if she is the One. Barney introduces them and Robin quickly becomes part of the gang. Robin is offput by Ted's strong feelings for her, as she is not looking for a relationship, nor has any future plans for marriage or kids. Still, an attraction persists between them, creating much confusion and tension.
Ted meets Victoria, a baker, at a friend's wedding. They decide to have a spectacular night by doing a series of random fun things like stealing the bouquet and tap dancing, but agree not to see each other after the wedding reception ends, to preserve the "perfect night" memory forever. Ted cannot resist tracking her down and they immediately begin dating. Robin becomes jealous when she realizes she does have feelings for Ted. Victoria is forced to move to Germany for a culinary fellowship, so she and Ted try long distance. This fails when Ted accidentally learns Robin does have feelings for him. He lies to Robin, telling her he and Victoria have ended their relationship so he can sleep with Robin. Robin finds out the truth just in time. Ted and Victoria break up, and Robin refuses to speak to Ted for a while. Ted enlists a dating company to help him find his perfect match. When they do, Ted arranges the date but ultimately chooses not to go, as all he wants is Robin. The gang is shocked to discover Barney was a hippie when he was younger, but his girlfriend at the time broke his heart by cheating on him with an arrogant businessman. This began his transformation into the womanizing suit he presents as today. Barney and Robin discover they have a lot of similarities when they spend a "bros night" together, smoking cigars and playing laser tag.
