Four historical ideal types of utopia are identified by Mannheim: orgiastic chiliasm (carried by the lower strata), liberal-humanitarian (carried by the bourgeoisie and intellectuals), conservative (carried by the status quo), and socialist-communist (carried by the proletarian).
Abstract. Karl Mannheim’s work, particularly his book Ideology and Utopia, has considerable relevance to current concerns about the public role of sociology. However, this is not widely recognised, and key aspects of his thought have frequently been neglected or disparaged.
The idealistic tradition attributed primary reality to the trans-individual complex of ideas; the individual was no more than a creature of this trans-individual reality. The properties of the individual could be derived from this reality; the in dividual imposed and added little or nothing to it.
Ideology and Utopia was first published in Germany in 1929. It sprang from Mannheim's personal sense of a deepening political and intellectual crisis. The crisis was most apparent in Germany, but extended from Germany throughout West European Civilization.
