Ken Lyons was the bassist for 38 Special from the band’s formation in 1974 until 1977. His bass playing provided the groundwork for the band’s early sound, contributing to their initial albums and helping to establish their presence in the rock music scene.
In 2013, after nearly a year of missing performances, Van Zant officially left 38 Special after 39 years and retired from music. In 2012 original bassist Ken Lyons died at age 59.
