  3. LAWMAN is a pretty decent American-made western, shot in Mexico by director-for-hire Michael Winner who doesn't get much chance to show off his later style, although the film is perhaps a little grimmer, a little grittier, a little more grounded in reality than usual.

  7. Variety described it as "a quite entertaining film that never hits many high spots but will amuse western addicts," adding, "Lancaster, as usual, is a highly convincing marshal, tough and taciturn. Ryan is also excellent as the faded, weak marshal with only memories.

  8. But 1971's "Lawman" is a surprisingly classy (for Winner) Western that you could comfortably watch with family members who are fans of the genre—the script offers some great laconic Western dialogue and there are no brutal sexual assaults tossed in here just so Winner can get his jollies off.
