The case led to a court fight that made him and his former bandmates even more angry with each other. Randy Owen said in public in 2013 that Mark Herndon was never really considered a member of the band.
Alabama countered that Herndon was just a hired musician, not an official member. The case dragged on for several years, and in 2017, a jury sided with Herndon. They ruled that he was indeed a full member of Alabama, and awarded him a whopping $18 million in damages.
