  1. It's just my take on this interesting Halloween prop. I've separated this instructable into 2 parts. Part 1, The box and Part 2, The Guts. The build of this box can stand alone and be used for any number of projects requiring a sturdy wooden box if you don't cut the window and jail bar area out.

The lid pusher uses a 1 1/16" bore double action universal mount pneumatic cylinder with a 2" stroke. The cylinder is controlled via a standard 12V 4-Way solenoid valve. The cylinder is mounted on the right side of the box towards the front and allows the lid to lift up by about 3-4". Exhaust mufflers are utilized to help quiet the sound of escapin...

The lid opener uses a 1 1/16" bore double action universal mount pneumatic cylinder with a 15" stroke. The cylinder is controlled via a standard 12V 3-Way solenoid valve. The cylinder is only connected at the bottom end and the top end port uses a male connector with a flow control. The reason for this is because if the cylinder was double action, ...

The box lifter uses a 1 1/16" bore double action universal mount pneumatic cylinder with a 2" stroke. The cylinder is controlled via a standard 12V 4-Way solenoid valve. The air cylinder is flanged mounted on the bottom of the box near the back center. This air cylinder lifts the box and tilts it forward considerably, even with a 2" stroke. However,...

The monster head is raised up and down using a 1 1/16" bore double action universal mount pneumatic cylinder with a 15" stroke. The air cylinder is controlled via a standard 12V 4-Way solenoid valve. The air cylinder is mounted on a cross-brace in the middle of the box and is pointed upwards. I had to mount the air cylinder diagonally as the total ...

Our air source ended up being a Campell-Hausfield 20 gallon, horizontal air compressor which was powered in our backyard. Since these air compressors are noisy, we did not want it in the front yard, so we used a 100 foot line of 3/8" air hose to bring the air to the front yard. Because we have several pneumatic props in our front yard and have the ...

Once the 3/8" air tubing entered our prop, it connected to an air regulator. The air regulator allows the air to be regulated to a specific air pressure that all the pneumatic air cylinders were set and fine tuned to. This allows the prop to work in the most efficiently way possible and to also maintain reliable operation even when there are variat...

    • Brainzzzzz!!! The prop has 2 operational states "Sleeping" and "Awake". While sleeping the box is relatively calm and only makes snoring and light growling sounds.
    • It's Aliiiiiive! A lid lifter is a device that will quickly raise and lower the lid to make it bang and bounce as if the monster is trying to escape.
    • Breath of Fire : Smoke and Lights. I used a cheap 400 Watt smoke generator for smoke effects. Out of the box this was radio controlled. To control it with the Arduino I opened the receiver and soldered two lead lines to the trigger button pads.
    • Use Your Outside Voice. The WaveShield has an 1/8 inch headphone jack as and output - as well as 2 i/o pins for a direct connection. I used an 1/8 inch patch chord to connect to a 30 Watt bass guitar amplifier that I borrowed from my practice room.
  4. Hi-Rez Designs has broken new ground (again) by putting a new spin on the decades old prop, the Monster in a Box. "Monster In-A-Box 2.0" adds new Hollywood-Quality Special Visual FX to this prop so you can actually SEE the vicious monster inside the animated box.
