He was born 17 January 1342 at Pointoise. After his capture at the Battle of Poitiers (1356), he was made duke of Burgundy by his father in 1363.
With nearly 200 images, this is one of the most sophisticated manuscripts to survive from the library of the Burgundian Dukes. The manuscript was produced in two main campaigns. The first was initiated in 1376 by Philip the Bold and paid for in 1379, with a few texts and images added in 1390.
