Charles Samuel Bush (born April 13, 1952) is an American mandolinist who is considered an originator of progressive bluegrass music. In 2020, he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as a member of New Grass Revival. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame a second time in 2023 as a solo artist. History.
He took home three-straight IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year awards, 1990-92, (and a fourth in 2007). In 1995 he reunited with Fleck, now a burgeoning superstar, and toured with the Flecktones, reigniting his penchant for improvisation.
Biography. Mandolin guru David Grisman called Sam Bush “the world’s greatest all-purpose mandolinist.” In a professional career that got underway in 1970, Bush was equally adept at both mandolin and fiddle, was a distinctive vocalist and songwriter, and pioneered a subgenre of bluegrass music that came to be known as “newgrass.”

Apr 11, 2010 · We first think of Sam Bush as an acoustic musician, which is true. Yet he's long used electric amps on stage and he plays pure rock on a Fender electric mandolin. Sam is one of the greatest F5 mandolin players ever. But he's also a fine fiddler, guitarist and slide blues player on a resophonic mandolin.
