An aging gunfighter, JB Books (John Wayne), rides into town. His deeds are infamous and, despite his age, he is still feared and, by some, revered. However, Books is dying of cancer and has about two months to live. Initially his thoughts turn to finding a nice quite place where he can die in peace.
The Shootist is a 1976 American Western film directed by Don Siegel and based on Glendon Swarthout's 1975 novel of the same name, and written by Miles Hood Swarthout (the son of the author) and Scott Hale.
Overview. Afflicted with a terminal illness John Bernard Books, the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler. Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boarding house run by a widow and her son.
