Wawel Hill was the site of the first early-Romanesque and Romanesque sacral buildings, among them a stone cathedral erected when the bishopric of Cracow was established in the year 1000. During the reign of Casimir the Restorer (r. 1034–1058), Wawel became a significant political and administrative center for the Polish State.
