This story contains spoilers for the Westworld Season 2 premiere and potential spoilers for the rest of the season. For more on the show, check out our review of Westworld Season 2, episode 1, "Journey into Night."

Westworld's Season 2 premiere ended on an ominous cliffhanger, as Bernard and the Delos security team discovered hundreds of seemingly drowned hosts floating in a newly-made sea. Bernard closed the episode by admitting that he believed himself responsible for killing all of the hosts somehow, as the camera lingered on one dead host in particular - Dolores' loyal partner Teddy.

We explore why Teddy's apparent death might not be permanent in our Westworld Diagnostics theory video below, but we also asked showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan whether we should trust what we're seeing when we caught up with them at the show's red carpet premiere.

"In many ways, Teddy is the heart and moral consciousness of the show, so if he were actually to be dead, it would have to mean that s**t was really f***ed up," Joy teased.

There's also the issue of how permanent death actually is in Westworld; Bernard and Teddy have both been repaired after suffering critical damage, so even if the hosts are actually "dead," there's no reason they can't be resurrected again - and you'd think that drowning would be one of the easiest fatalities to fix, compared to having to rebuild hearts and stitch up severed heads.

Our working theory is that the drowned hosts are some kind of trojan horse, either to take suspicion off Bernard (he'd certainly seem trustworthy to the Delos brass if he "killed" all the hosts who were giving them problems) and allow him to double-cross the bosses, or as a way to sneak a whole bunch of seemingly deactivated hosts back into the lab to complete their uprising and break out into the real world.

As we saw in the opening minutes on the beach, Strand's security forces were rounding up and executing all the hosts they discovered (even those that seemed harmless, as Bernard noted), but they probably wouldn't be quite as thorough with the drowned hosts, meaning that they'd be less damaged if they suddenly reactivated themselves (or were awoken by Bernard or another inside source later on).

This could all be accomplished by the "mesh network" that Bernard mentioned to Charlotte Hale in the Season 2 premiere, which supposedly allows all the hosts to interface with each other and pass information between them, like a psychic link, perhaps allowing a particularly powerful host (like the self-actualized Dolores) to give commands or "hack" a wider network of hosts.

Further evidence? This shot of Teddy standing in the lab dressed all in black and holding a gun from the Season 2 trailer, implying that he definitely gets back into the backstage area somehow.

Either way, it's clear that we're not getting the whole story with Bernard - and the game is only just beginning.
