Chevelle especially is a lyrically driven band with straight forward, purpose-built riffing. I think dumping time and money into SFX is going to absolutely detract from that. Some/many bands compensate lack of meaningful lyrical writing with flashiness. However the goofy alien stuff can definitely get shelved.
