Churchill produced nearly 600 paintings during his lifetime, nine of which will be on display at Hillsdale College, along with memorabilia from his life and times. This traveling exhibit is organized by the National Churchill Museum at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Virtual Tour.
Apr 2, 2018 · In 1959, President Eisenhower requested that Churchill’s paintings be shown in the U.S., and the resulting exhibition would go on to be seen by half a million visitors as it traveled across the country and on to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Churchill was forty before he discovered the pleasures of painting. The compositional challenge of depicting a landscape gave the heroic rebel in him temporary repose. He possessed the heightened perception of the genuine artist to whom no scene is commonplace. Over a period of forty-eight years his creativity yielded more than 500 pictures.
In 1967, the art historian David Coombs published a catalogue raisonné of Churchill's works, entitled Churchill: his paintings. The catalogue contains illustrations of, and details about, each of over 500 paintings known to have been undertaken by Churchill at the time of publication.
