The fictional gangsters are based on a real gang going by the same name in Birmingham in the 1800s. Edwards' character, Esme Shelby-Lee, marries into the family through John Shelby.
Stage and screen actress who first rose to fame for her portrayal of Sketch in the series Skins. She then went on to star as Sophie in the Detectorists and Esme in Peaky Blinders. She is also a successful stage star, making her Broadway debut in 2011 in the play Jerusalem.
