The philosophical mission of AfriCOBRA was to create images committed to a sublime expression of the African diaspora that would be identified by and reflected on by all black people. AfriCOBRA’s goal was to unite all members of the African Diaspora–they wanted to eliminate the western idea of the self and embrace the progress of the community.
AfriCOBRA's work incorporated elements of free jazz, vibrant, "kool-aid" colors, and images representing spiritual identity. Their images were to perform a function that Black people could directly relate to, emphasizing education and awareness of the conditions of Black people.

Members of AfriCOBRA visually expressed the central ideas of the Black Power movement—self-determination, unity, and black pride.
