Barry Levenson. As a former Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General, Barry Levenson found his passion in 1986 when walking the aisle of a supermarket at 2 in the morning. The mustards spoke to him (sort of!) and he embarked on a journey that led him to create the National Mustard Museum with more than 6,600 mustards from around the world.
Barry Levenson is the author of Habeas Codfish: Reflections on Food & The Law and teaches Food Law at the University of Wisconsin Law School. He was an Assistant Attorney General at the Wisconsin Department of Justice where he was head of the Criminal Appeals Division.
When Barry Levenson prepares for the annual World-Wide Mustard Competition, he starts by narrowing the field locally, and he must coach dozens of first-time judges. To make their job easier, he divides mustards into seventeen tasting categories, including honey mustards, American yellow, fruit, Dijon, herb, garlic, and exotic.
In 2009, the Museum moved to its current facility in downtown Middleton, Wisconsin, and changed its name to the more encompassing “National Mustard Museum.” From those few jars of mustard that Barry purchased in 1986, the Museum collection has grown to more than 6,500 mustards from all 50 United States and over 70 countries, along with ...
About 25 years ago, Barry Levenson walked away from a promising legal career with the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office to start a museum dedicated to mustard. The Mount Horeb Mustard Museum was born. Since then, the museum has changed names — it’s now the National Mustard Museum — and locations.
