Choose or Die debuts on Netflix on April 15, 2022.

Pac-Man. Space Invaders. Galaga. If you were a gamer in the ‘80s, you’ll have pumped plenty of quarters into those classic arcade games. But what if that weird-looking retro horror on your shelf started blurring the lines between fantasy and reality? Choose or Die brings this very simple idea to life as college dropout Kayla (Iona Evans) is stuck playing a lethal text adventure that might just spell game over for her and her friends. It’s an intriguing concept, but unfortunately, Choose or Die doesn’t do much with it, resulting in not much more than a bog-standard horror movie.

Essentially, Choose or Die takes a very simple concept and runs with it. We’ve all been terrified by a creepy video game that keeps us up at night. For a lot ‘90s kids, that was Resident Evil, and in the ‘00s, we all lost sleep to Silent Hill and its sequels.

But the retro stylings of the ‘80s conjure up a very specific kind of horror.

    Cube (1997)

    Saw (2004)

    Would You Rather (2012)

    Circle (2015)

    Ouija (2016)

    Truth or Dare (2018)

Then there are the film’s weirdly disjointed cutscenes. There’s a driving sequence at one point which is tampered by CURS>R – depicting the unfolding scene as a top-down driving level in the game. Unfortunately, there’s no good reason to take this approach other than mere gimmick, and it does nothing to add to the tension or action. It’s reminiscent of the over-the-top game-like visuals of Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

But Choose or Die is not that kind of movie. An attempt to lighten the mood instead just irks, leaving me wishing more attention had been paid to its rapidly degenerating plot. There are some inherently cool beats throughout, as the soundtrack from The Prodigy star Liam Howlett captures the retro ‘80s dread brilliantly. Unfortunately, the mood is entirely lost in a tangle of ideas that never quite pay off.

There's no cheat to make Choose or Die more than a pretty standard horror offering.

Choose or Die boots up a retro-style survival horror that will muster up a few delightful scares for the generation of gamers who grew up with Zork and The Valley of the Minotaur. But beneath this terror-filled glimpse of the ‘80s lies not much more than a bog-standard horror flick. The scares are soon replaced with a meandering plot that doesn’t q...
