The 1840’s, when “Civil Disobedience” was written, was a period of intense interest in social reform in the United States, which included a number of philosophical anarchists who advocated the dissolution of all government.
In fact, the cooperation of the tool itself—the standing army—is required. Thoreau wonders about the psychology of men who would fight a war and, perhaps, kill others out of obedience. He concludes that soldiers, by virtue of their absolute obedience to the state, become somewhat less than human.

“Civil Disobedience” originated as a Concord Lyceum lecture delivered on January 26, 1848. It was published as “Resistance to Civil Government,” in May of 1849, in Elizabeth Peabody’s Aesthetic Papers, a short-lived periodical that never managed a second issue.
