Below is a list of the GS locality pay areas applicable in January 2021 and the locations composing them. Most of the locations listed are counties. The Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) geographic codes consist of a two-digit State and three-digit county identifier.
The President's Pay Agent geographically defined the locality pay areas listed below after considering recommendations from the Federal Salary Council. The locality adjustments keep the salaries of federal employees competitive with their private sector equivalent. Federal jobs still typically pay less than the private sector but it would be much worse without the locality adjustments.
