It is historically recognized as not only one of the first to operate in the country but also the very first to offer regularly scheduled passenger service in New York along the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad.

Jul 6, 2006 · Mohawk & Hudson Railroad’s 0-4-0 DeWitt Clinton had a horizontal boiler, 54-inch cast-iron driving wheels, and weighed 3.5 tons. Built in 1831 by the West Point Foundry at a cost of $3,200, it was the first steam locomotive to haul passengers in New York state (Albany to Schenectady in August 1831).

The 1831 DeWitt Clinton locomotive was named in his honor. The community of Whitestone , New York was for several decades after his death known as Clintonville, but reverted to its traditional name; however, the governor is memorialized by Clintonville Street, a major local road.
