Charal was created for the 1985 made-for-TV film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Her name came about when ABC Entertainment pushed the movie's co-directors Jim and Ken Wheat to hire Cheryl Ladd to play the witch's part. In the actual movie, Charal was portrayed by Siân Phillips in her true form and Marianne Horine in her young witch form.
