A fever is defined as a body temperature above 100.4°F (38.3°C). The normal oral temperature for a resting, healthy adult is about 98.6°F (37°C).
The average normal oral temperature is 98.6 °F (37 °C). A rectal temperature is 0.5° F (0.3° C) to 1° F (0.6° C) higher than an oral temperature. A rectal temperature is generally thought to be the most accurate for checking a baby's temperature. An ear (tympanic) temperature is 0.5° F (0.3° C) to 1° F (0.6° C) higher than an oral temperature.
Normal body temperature ranges from 97.5°F to 98.9°F (36.4°C to 37.2°C). It tends to be lower in the morning and higher in the evening. Most healthcare providers consider a fever to be 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. High fevers may bring on seizures or confusion in children.
