George McCowan (June 27, 1927 – November 1, 1995) was a Canadian film and television director in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. McCowan began his career working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He worked as an actor and director for several seasons at the Stratford Festival, and moved to the United States in 1967.
He received a BS in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard University, where he worked as an assistant to Professor Georges F. Doriot, founder of American Research & Development Corp., an early venture capital firm, following service as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, Strategic Air Command.
Feb 8, 2022 · The story has been debunked by both Harvard and Stanford University. Stanford Magazine published an article in 1998 titled “Truth and Lies at Harvard” addressing the fabricated tale. “The account, of course, is wrong — and, in places, absurd,” the article reads in part.

Based on our research, we rate FALSE the claim that a couple founded Stanford University because Harvard refused to erect a memorial for their son. Stanford and his wife founded the university after their son died of typhoid. They did not ask the Harvard president at the time to erect a memorial.

George received an MBA from Harvard University and a BS in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, where he also served as a trustee from 1980-1985.
George McCown is a member of the Hoover Board of Overseers and was a trustee of Stanford University from 1980 to 1985. In 1984, George McCown cofounded and became managing director of McCown De Leeuw & Company, Menlo Park and New York City.
