Jun 14, 2020 · FACTS: About $400,000, were subscribed and paid into the treasury of the Philippine Islands by the inhabitants of the Spanish Dominions of the relief of those damaged by the earthquake, which took place in the Philippine Islands on June 3, 1863.
In 1863, after an earthquake in the Philippines, $400,000 was donated by Spanish subjects to the Philippine Treasury for relief of victims. Monte de Piedad received $80,000 as a loan from the Governor-General for working capital but refused to return it when demanded by the Philippine Treasury.

This is an appeal from a judgment of the Court of First Instance of the city of Manila in favor of the plaintiff and against the defendant for the sum of P 138,790.12, with interest at 6 per cent per annum from the 4th day of March 1915.

Nov 6, 2011 · The Philippine government is competent to institute action against Monte de Piedad, this is in accordance with the doctrine of Parens Patriae. The government being the protector of the rights of the people has the inherent supreme power to enforce such laws that will promote the public interest.
