In Esquire magazine, in September of 1994, Harold Bloom, compiler of the Western Canon, came up with "278 Books You Should Have Read By Now".
Jul 13, 2016 · I have tried here to include the entire list so that you will not need to read his Western Canon in its entirety before you begin reading great books. Likewise, this list can help you to prepare to read The Western Canon –or a literary course like it–with your primary work complete.
You can view the complete list here. Below, we’ve compiled a very partial, but still sizable, excerpt of texts from Bloom’s list that are available online through the University of Adelaide’s ebook library.
4.00 avg rating — 7 ratings. Harold Bloom has 1610 books on Goodreads with 2225552 ratings. Harold Bloom's most popular series is Bloom's Guides.
The Western Canon includes four appendices listing works that Bloom at the time considered canonical, stretching from the earliest scriptures to Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Bloom later disowned the list, saying that it was written at his editor's insistence and distracted from the book's intention.
The following titles are those mentioned in his book in chronological order. I will star the ones I've enjoyed and hope that you will too.
