Iolanthe; or, The Peer and the Peri ( / aɪ.oʊˈlænθiː /) is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert, first performed in 1882. It is one of the Savoy operas and is the seventh of fourteen operatic collaborations by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Iolanthe was written by the well-known British duo, Gilbert and Sullivan, best known for their comic operas. Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842 – 1900) alongside librettist W.S.Gilbert (1836-1911) worked together in a collaboration that lasted 25 years.
Both Gilbert and Sullivan were at the height of their creative powers in 1882, and many people feel that Iolanthe, their seventh work together, is the most perfect of their collaborations. Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd, wants to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery.
