James Smallwood Waterston (born January 17, 1969 in New York City, New York) is an actor who played four different characters on Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Waterston starred in the film Dead Poets Society (with Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, and Josh Charles).

He is the son of Sam Waterston, the actor who played DA Jack McCoy, and the older half-brother of actresses Elisabeth Waterston and Katherine Waterston, and filmmaker Graham Waterston. He is the brother-in-law of actor Louis Cancelmi, the brother of actress Annie Parisse, who played Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Borgia, who married his sister Elisabeth.

He helped founded the Malaparte theater company, along with Josh Hamilton, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Steve Zahn, and Frank Whaley, until Malaparte officially dissolved in 2000, in part because the members wanted to devote more time to their children.
