Miep and Jan Gies with plaque, 1987. In 1994, Gies was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as the Wallenberg Medal by the University of Michigan. The following year, Gies received the Yad Vashem Righteous Among the Nations medal.
Jan Gies ran an aid center to assist those returning, and he asked everyone whether they knew the Frank family and what had happened to them, but to no avail. Finally, on June 3, 1945, he received a definitive answer: someone told him that Otto Frank was on his way back to Amsterdam.
