Map & Directions. The Joseph Smith Homestead is located on the bank of the Mississippi River at the southwest corner of the intersection of Main and Water Streets in Nauvoo. Not more than six or seven buildings were standing. The Smith family moved into an existing two room log house on the riverfront now known as the Homestead. Once the water from the river bluffs was diverted, the city plan for Nauvoo was 4 acre blocks with four one acre lots per block.
These purchases were the beginning of what is known today as the Joseph Smith Historic Center. This historic center consists of the Homestead, Mansion House, Nauvoo House, Red Brick Store, and Visitor’s Center.
