Byron Raymond "Whizzer" White (June 8, 1917 – April 15, 2002) was an American lawyer, jurist, and professional football player who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1962 until 1993.

Feb 29, 2024 · A native of Colorado, Mr. White was valedictorian at the University of Colorado (1938) and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and he won a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford after graduation but deferred for a year to play professional football. He played only one season but led the league in rushing as a rookie.

BYRON R. WHITE was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, on June 8, 1917, and raised in the nearby town of Wellington. He entered the University of Colorado in 1934 and was graduated in 1938. White attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar for one year and then enrolled in Yale Law School.
Byron White (1917–2002) was Colorado’s first-ever US Supreme Court justice, serving from 1962 to 1993, as well as a nationally known college athlete for the University of Colorado and a star pro football player.
