- Doune Castle (Castle Leoch) Large and impressive old fortress in a lovely spot. Features as Castle Leoch, home of the Mackenzies in the 18th century and visited by Claire, the exterior, courtyard and great hall being used, although the kitchen and other rooms, such as Claire’s chamber, were a set.
- Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) Atmospheric old tower house on the Hopetoun estate. Broch Tuarach or Lallybroch, home of Jamie Fraser, having been left to him by his parents, and his sister Jenny and her husband, and visited by Claire after they are wed.
- Culross (Cranesmuir) Picturesque and largely unaltered village, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The village of Cranesmuir and location of Claire’s herb garden (Culross Palace, NTS).
- Falkland (Inverness) Pretty village with the magnificent royal palace. Inverness in the 1940s and the exterior of Mrs Baird’s B&B is the Covenanter Hotel (covenanterfalkland.co.uk, 01337 857163) (Season 1).
