Laura James has been working as a professional artist and illustrator for over twenty-five years. In addition to painting sacred images from various religions, she portrays women, families, and scenes of everyday life; blending intricate patterns, text, vibrant colors and sometimes surreal imagery into what she calls “art for the people.”

Sep 25, 2023 · Central Library, Youth Wing. Caribbean-American artist Laura James grew up in Brooklyn. Central Library was a second home to her, the only place her mother, a domestic worker, would let her go besides school. This library, where her works are now on view, was a sanctuary to the young artist.
Laura James was walking through her neighborhood in Bed-Stuy when she spotted a book about Ethiopian Christian art in a store window. “Hey, I could do that,” she thought to herself, and she picked up a paintbrush. It turns out, she was right. She sold her first painting within the year.
Laura’s secular work reflects her life, a world surrounded by women. She proudly paints women, adding beauty to mundane aspects of life. Shop Now.
Laura James is a self-taught painter living and working in New York City. She is a visual storyteller who explores biblical subjects, cultural issues and secular themes through her unique contemporary use of the traditional art of Ethiopian iconography.
