Donna Shellstrop is Eleanor Shellstrop's mother.
Donna Shellstrop was once married to Doug Shellstrop. She is first seen in a flashback where Eleanor gets her to sign emancipation papers. She is not a very good person, as she forgot Eleanor's birthday at least once.
She and Doug are the reason Eleanor is so selfish as they taught Eleanor that she always needs to put herself first in order to survive. She is responsible for the death of Eleanor's dog Max.
During the funeral of her ex-husband, she crashed and hit on her daughter's boyfriend. She faked her death after getting drunk, bidding $30,000 for a date with Gene Simmons (outbidding everyone else by $29,800), and not wanting to pay up. Some time later, she moved to Nevada as Diana Tremaine, where she met Dave Katterttrune and they quickly got together. She told him about who she really was.
She moved in with him and his daughter Patricia, and despite changing for the better, she still kept a stash of money in case she needed to run away. Eleanor and Michael arrived to discover that she seemed to have changed for the better despite Eleanor's skepticism and intent search for signs Donna hadn't changed.
Shortly after Donna won an election for PTA secretary, Eleanor discovered Donna's stash of money. Eleanor recognized that Donna's redemption hinged on letting go of her exit strategy and committing to her new life. She encouraged her mother to use her escape money for Patricia.
In the finale, she is mentioned by Chidi, when he is telling Eleanor he is ready to go through the door (implying to the audience that Donna is in the afterlife).
