Perhaps Maurice’s best known achievement was the invention of one of Britain’s most celebrated designs, the Land Rover. This ‘go-anywhere’ vehicle was the product of Maurice’s engineering design skills and Spencer’s eye for business – and the grandfather of the 4x4.
Mr. Wilks, who was 59, died last Sunday at his home in Anglesey. He joined the Rover company in 1930 as chief engineer, a position he held until becoming technical director in 1946; he was appointed managing director in 1960.
Maurice Cary Ferdinand Wilks (1904 - 1963) was the chief designer at the British car company Rover at the end of World War II, responsible for the development of the Land Rover utility vehicle. He discovered a need for the vehicle when using his own Willys Jeep, (an old war jeep) on his farm in Newborough, Anglesey.
