It was the bank that drew the attention of America’s most notorious bank and train robbers: the James-Younger Gang. In late August 1876, the James-Younger Gang headed for Minnesota. The gang consisted of brothers Jesse and Frank James; brothers Bob, Jim, and Cole Younger; Clell Miller; Charlie Pitts; and Bill Stiles.
On September 7, 1876, the notorious James-Younger Gang rode into Northfield, Minnesota to rob the town's First National Bank. The gang, made up of members Cole Younger, Frank James, Jesse James, Jim Younger, Bob Younger, Clell Miller, Bill Chadwell, and Charlie Pitts, had spent 10 years robbing banks and trains after the end of the Civil War.
The James–Younger Gang dissolved in 1876, following the capture of the Younger brothers in Minnesota during the unsuccessful attempt to rob the Northfield First National Bank. Three years later, Jesse James organized a new gang, including Clell Miller's brother Ed and the Ford brothers ( Robert and Charles ), and renewed his criminal career.

On September 7, 1876, the opening day of hunting season in Minnesota, the James–Younger gang attempted a raid on the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota. The robbery quickly went wrong, however, and after the robbery only Frank and Jesse James remained alive and free.
On the morning of September 7, 1876, the people of Northfield had no idea that their First National Bank was the target of the notorious James-Younger Gang. They went about their business believing their money, and their town was safe.
