Pornichet est devenue une commune en 1900, à partir de territoires de Saint-Nazaire et La Baule-Escoublac. Ses habitants, qui s'appellent les Pornichétins, sont au nombre de 12 121 habitants en 2021.
Pornichet is located on the sunny Atlantic coast to the south of Guerande in the Pays de la Loire region.
