Trenton, N.J. Samuel A. Alito, Jr. is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated to the Court by President George W. Bush (R) to fill the seat left vacant by Sandra Day O'Connor on October 31, 2005. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in on January 31, 2006.
The Senate unanimously confirmed him in April. Alito would serve on the Third Circuit for more than 15 years, articulating conservative views that foreshadowed some of his opinions on the Supreme Court. The events leading to Alito’s arrival on the Court took several twists and turns.
