He is a director and producer, known for Ankur: The Seedling (1974), Bhumika (1977) and Trikal (Past, Present, Future) (1985). Trivia (4) Cousin of Guru Dutt. His paternal grand-mother and Dutt's maternal grandmother were cousins.
Shyam Benegal began his career as a copywriter at Lintas advertising agency, Mumbai. He directed over 900 sponsored documentaries and advertising films. Shyam taught at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, and he worked as its chairman, twice. He bestowed with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
