In younger children, symptoms of depression may include sadness, irritability, clinginess, worry, aches and pains, refusing to go to school, or being underweight.

    • Feeling sad or empty. Mood changes are one of the most common symptoms of depression. A person who has depression may feel sad or low for extended periods.
    • Feeling hopeless or helpless. Depression can make people feel hopeless because there is no foreseeable end to how they are feeling. A person may also feel helpless.
    • Feeling worthless. A person with depression may feel as though they are worthless or their life has no meaning. They may also believe that they are a burden to others and that the world or their family is better off without them.
    • Feeling excessively guilty. Guilt is a normal reaction after a person says or does something that they regret, but people with depression may have ongoing feelings of guilt for no reason.
    • Persistent low mood. Many of us feel down from time to time, but when this feeling just won’t go away, it may mean you’re experiencing depression. You might feel like you’re continually out of sorts.
    • Loss of interest or pleasure in things you once enjoyed. “What’s the point?” and “Why bother?” are phrases you might say describe your mood for a few weeks straight.
    • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness. Many people with depression can feel overwhelming guilt about past actions or events, or even feel guilty about being depressed.
    • Loss of sex drive. When you’re depressed, your desire for sex may wane. You may start to wonder what happened to your sex drive. This can lead to more guilty feelings, especially if your partner is having difficulty understanding why you no longer want this type of intimacy.
    • Sadness. The most common symptom of depression is a feeling of sadness or emptiness that lasts for more than two weeks. A person may describe this symptom as a feeling of “hopelessness.”
    • Worthlessness. Continual feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or helplessness often accompany the condition. People tend to focus on personal shortcomings or past failures.
    • Irritability. Depression may cause people to get easily frustrated or angered, even over small or insignificant matters. This often relates back to a person experiencing levels of tension and fatigue that makes it difficult to get through the day.
    • Fatigue. People with depression often experience lack of energy or feel tired all the time. Small tasks, like showering or getting out of bed, may seem to require more effort than one can muster.
