Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar FRS (/ ˌ tʃ æ n d r ə ˈ ʃ eɪ k ər /; 19 October 1910 – 21 August 1995) was an Indian-American theoretical physicist who made significant contributions to understanding of stellar evolution, black holes, and the structure of stars.
For 19 years, he served as editor of the Astrophysical Journal and turned it into a world-class publication. In 1983, Chandra was awarded the Nobel prize for his theoretical studies of the physical processes important to the structure and evolution of stars.
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was one of the foremost astrophysicists of the twentieth century. He was one of the first scientists to couple the study of physics with the study of astronomy. Chandra proved that there was an upper limit to the mass of a white dwarf.
