Let’s start with the classics. Here are the things I enjoyed most the first time I travelled to Tbilisi and always recommend to friends and family when they visit.
Old Tbilisi or Dzveli Tbilisiis a vast area that stretches from Abanotubani (the sulfur bath district) up to Sololaki and across the river to Old Avlabari and Chugureti on the Left Bank. The combination of Georgian, Jewish, Armenian and Germanheritage makes it a fascinating area to explore.
There’s no two ways about it: Tbilisi is a foodie’s paradise. Here are my favourite activities and experiences that revolve around food and drink.
Tbilisi is a playground for urbexers and photographers who are intrigued by Soviet history. Here are my favourite Soviet throwbacks.
If you’re lucky enough to get a few sunny days during your stay in Tbilisi, try a few of these outdoor activities.
- Tbilisi Old Town. Located right on the bank of the River Mtkvari is the old town of Tbilisi which dates back to the 5th century AD. According to Georgian history, the old town was founded by King Gorgasali of Iberia and was then ruled under the reign of many different cultures including the Persians, Arab conquerors, and the Mongols.
- Narikala Fortress. Narikala Fortress is located within Tbilisi Old Town and is an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defense. Also known as the ‘Mother Fortress of Tbilisi’ this place was founded during the 4th century, which was when the city itself came into existence.
- Kartlis Deda (Mother Georgia Statue) Very similar in appearance to the Rodina Mat (Nations mother) statue in Kyiv, Kartlis Deda rises above the city in stern defiance from the top of Sololaki Hill.
- The Holy Trinity Cathedral. The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Cathedral in Georgia and is one of the most beautiful buildings in Tbilisi.
- Marvelling at horizon-stretching views. Reached on a funicular railway that trundles up a vertigo-inducing cliff face, Tbilisi's best views are from atop Mt Mtatsminda.
- Immersing yourself in modern architecture. Tbilisi's architectural collage of faded Art Nouveau apartments, 19th-century wooden buildings and Soviet-era tower blocks has been enlivened over recent years with audacious modern structures.
- Meeting Mother Georgia. From the Mtkvari's northern bank, a gondola system swings lazily over the river and soars above the Old Town to the Narikala Fortress.
- Wandering the Old Town's meandering streets. Winding lazily downhill from Freedom Square, Tbilisi's atmospheric Old Town is characterised by wooden structures with carved verandas and narrow shopfronts filled with cafes, wine bars and art galleries.
