The story takes place in Clairton, Pennsylvania, a working-class town on the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh, and in Vietnam. The film was based in part on an unproduced screenplay called The Man Who Came to Play by Louis A. Garfinkle and Quinn K. Redeker about Las Vegas and Russian roulette.
The majority of the movie’s scenes were shot in Washington D.C., Ohio and Pennsylvania. The town of Clairton in western Pennsylvania is where most of the film takes place. In fact, it is said that almost all outdoor sequences such as weddings or funerals were filmed here.

The hunting lodge depicted throughout much of Deer Hunter is actually situated within Rohner Park outside Eureka, California. Filming took place over five days along with multiple other sites around Humboldt County including Blue Lake Rancheria and Patrick’s Point State Park.
