The first season of HBO's True Detective ended on a surprisingly touching and life-affirming note for such a bleak, existentialist crime drama. But what a tense, creepy ride to get there.

Hart and Cohle's handling of Gerasi was suitably badass as they got what they needed out of their lawman/hostage before leaving him on a note that was both humorous and shocking as Cohle's threat of a sniper contract paid off with a literal bang (or four). But it was the time spent with killer Errol Childress (Glenn Fleshler, who you may not realize is the same actor who played George Remus on Boardwalk Empire) that provided this episode with some of its most memorable moments.

So, yes, our villain all along was the scarred "lawnmower man" Errol, whose dead eyes and creepy whistling makes it a wonder he ever got a job anywhere near a school. But as Hart and Cohle discover through dogged detective work (tax records for the win!), the Childress family's company had many parish contracts up and down the coast that allowed them access to schools, churches, and even cemeteries.

The first season finale for HBO's True Detective was a truly creepy, gripping and emotional close to one of the best crime dramas ever produced for television.
