After a 14-year playing career with Italian clubs including Reggiana and Empoli , Mazzarri coached several smaller Italian sides and in 2007 took up a managerial position with Sampdoria .

Walter Mazzarri's only Premier League job to date came during the 2016/17 season with Watford. A midfielder in his playing days, Mazzarri enjoyed a 15-year professional career with a whole host of Italian teams including Pescara, Cagliari and Empoli.
