     It is true that the Comparator

     interface has 2 abstract methods. But one of them is equals, which overrides the equals method defined in the Object class, and this method doesn't count.

     If an interface declares an abstract method overriding one of the public methods of java.lang.Object, that also does not count toward the interface's abstract method count since any implementation of the interface will have an implementation from java.lang.Object or elsewhere.

     As such, this makes the Comparator interface a functional interface where the functional method is compare(o1, o2)

     The lambda expression (a, b) -> a > b ? -1 : 1 complies with that contract: it declares 2 parameters and return an int.

     Instead of ArrayList grades; you'd have to use ArrayList grades = new ArrayList();

     Yet better: ArrayList<Float> grades = new ArrayList<Float>(); //or use Double or Number

     Note that unlike C or C++ creating a variable doesn't create the object as well. In C++ you could imagine your code as ArrayList* grades; i.e. you'd just create the reference/pointer here.

     Additional thoughts:

     • Dictionary studentGrades; this will be initialized to null.
     • public void main(String[] args) that's not a valid main function since it would have to be static
     • if you have a public static void main(String[] args) you can't use this since you don't have an object instance in the static context
     • You can't instantiate Dictionary since it is abstract. Use one of its subclasses, e.g. new Hashtable<String, List<Float>>(), or a map, e.g. Map<String, List<Float> dictionary = new HashMap<String, List<Float>>();
     • Note that local primitive variables are also not initialized, so this could give you an error too: boolean res; In Java only class members are initialized, local variables are not.

     Comparator functions that contain 1 or -1 are error prone.

     Instead, you should write it like this:

     public static int lexicographically(List<Integer> a, List<Integer> b) { for (int i = 0, end = Math.min(a.size(), b.size()); i < end; i++) { int res = Integer.compare(a.get(i), b.get(i)); if (res != 0) return res; } return Integer.compare(a.size(), b.size());}

     This style of writing comparator functions prevents various common mistakes, such as never returning 0.

     The most important pattern in this style is:

     • Compare by the first criterion.
     • If the given values differ, return the comparison result and be done.
     • Take the next criterion, continue with step 1.
     • If there are no criteria left, return 0.

     In order to implement true function calls in Hack, you need to first implement a push-down stack. Once that is done it is relatively straightforward.

     Then, to make function calls, you load D with the return address and push it. For single-parameter function calls you can pass the function parameter in D; for multiple-parameter calls you will also need to push these values onto the stack.

     You then make an unconditional jump to the function. In the function, you do whatever you need to do (including popping any parameters from the stack). Finally, you pop the return address from the stack into A and unconditionally jump.

     The return operation can be done in 4 instructions. The call operation requires 9 instructions.

     If functions are guaranteed to be non-recursive, you can dispense with the stack and put the function parameters, including the return address, in a fixed block of memory associated with each function.

     No. In alpha[2] = 3 2 is the index variable, and 3 is the value being indexed. The other thought that I would have is that I have to square the index number [0],[1],[2] Correct.

     You are expected (I think) to use a loop with a conditional (but you might also use two separate loops with different initial and terminal conditions) to do these assignments.

     You are dealing with int(s), so use an int[]. Something like,

     int[] alpha = new int[50];-

     Then you might use a single for loop like,

     for (int index = 0; index < alpha.length; index++) { if (index < 25) { alpha[index] = index * index; } else { alpha[index] = index * 3; }}

     or two loops like

     for (int index = 0; index < 25; index++) { alpha[index] = index * index;}for (int index = 25; index < alpha.length; index++) { alpha[index] = 3 * index;}

     or using a ternary (conditional operator ? :) and a loop like

     for (int index = 0; index < alpha.length; index++) { alpha[index] = index * ((index < 25) ? index : 3);}-
