Tommy Kinard is a former firefighter who previously worked at Station 118 of the Los Angeles Fire Department. He now works as a pilot at LAFD Air Operations.

    Station 118

Tommy was working at the 118 when Howard Han started there. At first, he is rude and dismissive of Chimney, suggesting Chimney might be the food delivery person when he arrives, and then rejecting Chimney's attempts to start a friendlier working relationship. However, after Chimney saves his life during a gas explosion, he thanks Chimney, and develops a newfound respect for him. He is also at the 118 when Henrietta Wilson arrives. He is cold to her at first, but as she proves herself in the field, he develops a respect for her, and commends her for how she noticed something significant and acted faster than the rest of the team. By the time Robert Nash joins as the 118's new captain, Tommy has developed a friendly relationship with both Hen and Chimney, participating in Hen's betting pool about how long their new captain will stay, and going out for drinks with them both, too. They surprise him with balloons and a cake when he moves to the 217.

    Saving Bobby and Athena

When Hen suspects Bobby and Athena are in trouble, she decides to take a helicopter to find them, and in doing so, reunites with Tommy, who covers for her. Turns out, Buck, Eddie and Chimney had already reached out to Tommy to go rescue Bobby and Athena. He successfully pilots the helicopter into the hurricane, enabling them to locate the cruise ship and start the rescue.

    Befriending Eddie and Kissing Buck

After rescuing Bobby and Athena with the 118, Tommy strikes up a friendship with Eddie based on their shared histories in the Army, interest in MMA and Muay Thai, and fixing cars. Buck, after witnessing Tommy fly Eddie off in a helicopter bound for Vegas to see a fight, begins to grow jealous. This jealousy grows throughout the episode, during which Buck voices his contempt for Tommy to Maddie and Chimney. After crashing a basketball game where Eddie and Tommy are playing, Buck, frustrated by losing to the pair, aggressively knocks Eddie to the ground as he goes for a basket. This results in Eddie suffering a sprain, and Buck later admits to Maddie that it may not have been a total accident. Tommy later shows up at Buck’s loft, intent on clearing the air. He admits he doesn’t want to create bad blood between Buck and Eddie, and Buck waves off the apology and tells him he is at fault because he can be too jealous. After reassuring him that he could never take Buck’s place in Eddie’s life, the two men share a flirtatious exchange that ends in Tommy kissing Buck. After asking a flustered Buck if that was okay, he asks him out on a date, to which Buck accepts.

•Although his nametag says his last name is Kincaid, every episode's official press release he has appeared in lists him as Kinard. This is most likely an error by the production team, as Bobby even addressed him directly as "Kinard" on one occasion.

•This mistake is corrected when Tommy reappears in Capsized, as his name tag now says Kinard instead of Kincaid.

•Chimney calls Tommy to ask him to help with a neighborhood gas leak in Broken.

•Chimney later references this in The One That Got Away when he states that he has been in contact with Tommy since Tommy's departure from the 118.

•His favorite movie is Love Actually, he loves Monster Trucks and Craft Beer.

•Sal Deluca had insinuated that Tommy was gay while they were still with the 118. Ironically, he was right as Tommy discovered his sexuality years later.
