Edd:Today, Tamia is known as one of R&B’s most reliable stalwarts. But back in 1998, her career was just beginning. Brandy featuring Wayna Morris, “Brokenhearted” 97. Johnny Gill, “...

Charles: Lyrics like “Walks by me every day; Her and love are the same; The woman that’s stolen my heart; And beauty is her name”, are enough to make you fall in love with this song. Add a simple but ethereal track with Sisqo proclaiming his love backed up with that classic Dru Hill harmony, you have a hit that will stand the test of time. You can’...

Juwan: This is the Faith Evans I love, raw emotion and passion in her singing. A classic bop! 59. Janet Jackson, “Anytime, Anyplace” 58. Erykah Badu, “Next Lifetime” 57. Charles: Mary J. Blige is so popular because she makes you feel what she is feeling through her songs. From the first moan of the intro, Mary grabs you and delivers a song that paints a dim yet vivid picture of what she has gone through in a wasted a relationship. With a Babyface-crafted backdrop, Mary gets it totally right. The haunting image of h...

Nicolette:Toni’s debut project was filled with hits. “Breathe Again” was another joint to remind the masses that she was definitely here to stay.

    • Patricia Sweet
    • Bell Biv Devoe: Poison. Once you hear the first snare of this jam, people on the dance floor automatically start doing the running man. Bell Biv Devoe features half of New Edition and is one of the first examples of blending R&B and hip-hop pre-Jodeci.
    • Mariah Carey – Fantasy. Choosing the best R&B jam from the Mariah Carey cannon is like picking your favorite child, the woman has had No.1 hits every decade since she hit her first falsetto note, but “Fantasy” combines all of the elements of Mimi.
    • Ginuwine – Pony. Not to be outdone, Ginuwine’s sonic love letter to lady-on-top has what is quite possibly the most unmistakable beat in R&B history, along with the least subtle metaphor ever written.
    • Montell Jordan: This Is How We Do It. This is the ultimate party starter that has stood the test of time. “It’s Friday niiight and I feel alright! ,” Montell Jordan sang over a sampled loop of Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story.”

But to quite honest, that’s just scratching the surface of what the 1990s had to offer.
