Sep 16, 2020 · New York, USA. Phone +1 585-493-3600. Web Visit website. Dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth is defined by a deep gorge carved out by the roaring Genesee River. Besides its scenic cliffs and vistas, the park boasts three massive waterfalls, simply known as the lower, middle, and upper falls.
In 1972 Hurricane Agnes caused the Genesee River to overflow and flood the surrounding areas. Flood waters almost topped the spillway on the Mount Morris Dam in Letchworth State Park. The Flood of ‘72 caused tremendous damage to the region.
After passing through Allegany County communities like Wellsville and Houghton, the Genesee River flows north through Letchworth State Park and the City of Rochester before emptying into Lake Ontario. The hydropower it provided was essential in the beginnings of Rochester’s heavy industry.
