Amherst (/ ˈ æ m h ər s t / ⓘ) is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of Buffalo. As of 2020, the town had a total population of 129,595. This represents an increase from 122,366 as reported in the 2010 census. It is the 14th most populated municipality in New York.

A History of the Town of Amherst, N.Y., 1818-1965, was published by the Town of Amherst in 1965 and written by the Town Clerk and Town Historian, Sue Miller Young. A descendent of some of Amherst’s oldest families, Mrs. Young was one of the founding members of the Williamsville Historical Society and an accomplished archer.
The main exhibit building contains a variety of folksy historic exhibits that paint a vivid picture of rural life in 19th-century Western New York, as well as an extensive research library of historic records that detail the evolution of Amherst from a rural farming community to a modern suburb.
